Monthly Close — Line Item

“Reconciled, reviewed, and explained in plain English — before the 15th of every month.”

Why This Exists

Most small businesses don't have a bookkeeping problem. They have a timing problem.

By the time a business owner sits down with a tax preparer in March, the year's decisions are already made. Voss Advisory works the other direction: books stay current every month, so tax strategy happens in July and October — not in a panic in April.

We work with a deliberately small number of clients at a time. That's what makes monthly numbers meetings, same-week email replies, and a fixed fee (instead of a running hourly clock) possible.

Getting Started

What happens after you reach out

No document upload portal to figure out on day one, no obligation on the first call.

01

Discovery call (15–20 minutes)

We talk through where your books currently stand, what software you're using, and whether we're a fit — no pitch deck.

02

Books review

We look at your last 2–3 months of transactions to understand cleanup scope, if any, before quoting a fixed fee.

03

Proposal & engagement letter

A written scope and fixed monthly fee based on your transaction volume and complexity — no surprise hourly charges later.

04

Onboarding & first close

We connect your accounts, clean up anything outstanding, and deliver your first monthly close within 30 days.

Why Voss Advisory

What's different about how we work

Fixed monthly fee

You're quoted one number based on your books' complexity — not billed by the hour for every email or phone call.

A monthly numbers meeting, not an annual one

Most clients hear from us every month, not just at tax time — so decisions get made while there's still time to act on them.

A deliberately small client roster

We work with a limited number of businesses at a time so replies happen within two business days, not two weeks.

Built for QuickBooks & Xero, not spreadsheets

If you're still tracking your business in a spreadsheet, cleanup and migration onto proper software is part of onboarding.

Founder

Maren Voss, CPA

Before starting the practice, Maren spent seven years inside a regional accounting firm, watching small business owners get their tax return once a year and little else in between.

She started Voss Advisory in 2015 on the premise that a small business's numbers are only useful if someone is looking at them regularly. Today the practice includes two staff accountants and works with a limited roster of Portland-area businesses.

Principal, photography studio — client since 2019

Common Questions

Before you book a call

What does it cost?
Fees are fixed and quoted monthly based on your transaction volume, entity structure, and whether cleanup work is needed at the start. We'll give you a specific number after reviewing your books — not a per-hour estimate.
Do you work with clients outside Portland?
Most of our engagement happens by video call and shared cloud software, so we work with businesses anywhere in Oregon and Washington. Oregon-based tax preparation is our core focus; ask on your discovery call if you're based elsewhere.
What if my books are a mess right now?
That's a common starting point, not a disqualifier. Cleanup is scoped separately during onboarding so it doesn't get buried inside your ongoing monthly fee.
